Sun racconta Yishun is Burning qui.

We say goodbye to Cavea of the Auditorium Parco della Musica to enter the heart of REF’s program.
A heart where sounds, rituals and new languages intertwine and in which we will help you orientate. To make the best of the last summer evenings, meet us from the 20th to the 24th of september on the charming Terrazza del Bosco in Villa Medici where, together with Treccani we will present for the second year the format Le Parole delle Canzoni: dialogues between musicians and writers to delve into the lyrics of the songs and the texts of italian narrative, followed by short lives and musical performances. This year’s program starts on the 20th of September with the words of the italo-palestinian Laila Al Habash in dialogue with writer Nadia Terranova, and continues on the 21st of September with a dive into the roman rap scene by Danno (Colle Der Fomento) in dialogue with Zerocalacare. Songwriting, trap, lol rap, indie combine in the undefined and sharp personality of Tutti Fenomeni confronting with the writing of Veronica Raimo (September 23rd), while closing the cycle on the 24th will be the elegant lyrics of Giovanni Truppi in dialogue with Giulia Caminito.
On those same days Villa Medici hosts another appointment that we really care about: Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels presents with us and the French Academy the itinerant site-specific work by french coreographer Noé Soulier, a piece where the performers dialogue with the wonderful architecture of the Villa absorbing and elaborating the charm and the history of the place.

Our journey at the Mattatoio Testaccio starts on September 22nd, immediately taking us to discover imaginaries and poetry of international artists: showing until the 23rd Akal by coreographer and dancer Radouan Mriziga, originating from Marocco, who stages dancer and singer Dorothée Munyaneza in a solo in which ritual, dance and architecture mix with song, poetry and rap to rewrite the memory of the Imazighen, natives of North Africa beginning from the mythological figure of the Egyptian goddess Neith, associated with birth and death and guide of the souls of the dead in the underworld. Asian shaman traditions meet ballrooms and Vogueing in the powerful Yishun is Burning by Singaporean (but based in Berlin) Choy Ka Fai, who with dancer Sun Pitthaya Phaefuang, icon of Thailand’s queer scene, builds a transcendent , multimedia and multi-national solo. Performing on the 24th and the 25th of September, the show is the start of the section Digitalive curated by Federica Patti, that we will delve into next week. Sun talks about Yishun is Burning here.

But there are two comebacks we cannot not talk about. The first is the one by a giant of international musical theatre, one of the biggest innovators of the performing and multimedia scene, an unstoppable experimenter who has become a reference point with his creations of sound and visual events, with his technologic and musical instalments, but most of all for his compositions for the Ensemble Modern, nowadays performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker too. We are talking about Heiner Goebbels who is coming back to Romaeuropa Festival on the 25th of september in the Sala Petrassi of the Auditorium Parco della Musica confronting himself with the texts of Henri Michaux in his Libertè d’action bringing on stage the actor David Bennent and the pianists of the Ensemble Modern.
The last appointment we will talk about is an awaited return: the one of a visionary, eclectic, unpredictable artist who made us dream during REF19 imposing himself in our amazed eyes and in our hearts. We are obviously talking about James Thierrée and of his Room performing from the 21st to the 25th of September at Teatro Argentina. We won’t say more about this thrilling work, we will leave you to his words instead.
