REf2022, quinta settimana

Romaeuropa Festival’s fifth week opens with a focus on discovery, carrying on a journey about new voices of theatre and the non-Europeans performing arts scene, with a look on our present, on the world we all live in together.

Sparking debate and causing distress to the way we talk about our reality, the two shows presented by Mexican company Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol, at REF for the first time on the 4th and the 6th of October at the Mattatoio in Testaccio. A small focus on the paths that liven up team led by Luisa Pardo and Lázaro Gabino Rodríguez and focused since 2003 on the development of projects that mean to put in touch performance and life («to erase and trace borders, to reveal and overturn what life melts, neglects and presents as a fact») swinging between autobiography and Mexico’s political history. This is why Lázaro – a project initially conceived for the web by the invitation of Argentinian director Lola Arias – builds itself around two simple questions: what does being yourself mean? And what do you have to lose about yourself to become someone else? An actor decides to become someone else, something different, playing himself and opening that abyss that separates reality from self-representation, that void between the way we look at the world and the way the world sees us.
Tiburón is just a piece of the wider project “Democracy in Mexico 1965-2015”, it’s a reconstruction and staging of the journey of the Evangelist José Maria de Barahona who arrived on the isle of Tiburon from Seville in the XVI century. His letters (part of the few documents we have left) describe the native tribes as the most barbaric of the north. Lagartijas invites the audience to a powerful reflection on colonialism and at the same time continues to investigate the relationship between fiction and reality. What makes History? And how does its narration ends up building our own selves?

With a different language, coreographer Marcos Morau arrives on the 5th and 6th of October at Teatro Argentina with his company La Veronal to present the national premiere of his homage to the magic of theatre: Opening Night. With his coreographic writing capable of drawing from tradition of dance-theatre and at the same time of revolutionising it with his vision, the coreographer undresses and transforms the scenic machine in a mysterious and fascinating dream (it is not a coincidence that the title of his show cites openly the famous film by John Cassavetes).

The dramaturgical and theatrical paths of the week takes us to the musical weekend of this edition: coming back on the 6th of October at the Auditorium Parco della Musica “Ennio Morricone”, the Dream House Quartet founded by Bryce Dessner (one of the founders of The National and an eclectic artist capable of going from rock to contemporary classical music passing through the many collaborations in the world of pop music), guitarist David Chalmin and sisters pianists Katia and Marielle Labéque. AT the centre of this new live Les enfants terribles by Philip Glass, followed by the first and absolute Italian executions of new pieces by Chalmin and Dessner himself.

Animating the weekend’s evenings at Mattatoio will be LineUp, Ref’s musical section born from the intent of exploring changes, manners of creations, identities and narrations of the new pop and urban Italian scene: from the contaminated sounds of LaHasna e Nava (October 8th) to the elegant R’n’B of LNDFK and Joan Thiele (October 9th), arriving to Elasi’s carefree and danceable pop (October 10th). Opening a window on the theme of identity and self-determination, Eclissi Talk, a project by Pietro Turano born by the podcast of the same name produced by Cross Productions (Skam Italia) and already become a cult: a talk with live music starring, along Turano, protagonists of the podcast and writer Michela Murgia. Real and virtual, present and future worlds: alongside this path inside the Mattatoio there will be the AR sculptures by Auriea Harvey, part of Digitalive’s program in collaboration with VRE Fest Virtual Reality Experience from the 6th of October to the 6th of November.

See you next week!
