Il Romaeuropa Festival apre uno sguardo sulla scena artistica lituana contemporanea: un viaggio tra suoni ancestrali, sperimentazioni musicali, riflessioni poetiche e danza ipnotica. Dal 30 settembre al 5 ottobre, il pubblico sarà immerso in un focus che unisce tradizione, innovazione e nuove visioni artistiche grazie al Progetto speciale Arte e Cultura Lituana al REF2025.
MEROPE — Vejula Live

La band lituana MEROPE porta al Romaeuropa Festival il suo folk minimalista, sospeso tra armonie sottili ed elettronica evocativa. Il duo composto da Indre Jurgeleviciute e Bert Cools presenta Vejula, l’album acclamato in tutto il mondo per la sua atmosfera unica fatta di improvvisazioni e sonorità ancestrali. Una musica che sembra respirare con la natura.
Sports Group — Musical Performance

Sports Group porta il dinamismo dello sport nel mondo della musica, trasformando il palco in un laboratorio sonoro dove movimento e suono si fondono in un’unica esperienza. L’idea nasce durante una partita di basket: il rimbalzo asincrono dei palloni, le grida dei giocatori, il ritmo imprevedibile del gioco iniziano a suonare come una melodia disordinata. Da questa intuizione, l’ensemble lituano formato da Gabriel Labanauskaite, Gaile Griciute, Viktorija Damerell ha dato vita a un progetto che esplora il confine tra “musica attraverso lo sport” e “sport attraverso la musica”. Sports Group prende forma da frammenti di esperienze raccolte in palestre, campi sportivi, blog, vlog e pubblicità, riflettendo sulla condizione dell’essere umano moderno, sospeso tra l’attenzione e la cura del corpo e l’autorealizzazione come pura esibizione e fonte di ansia. Sul palco, sei attrezzi da palestra sono reinventati come strumenti musicali, dando vita a una performance musicale che mescola le regole e le immagini del mondo sportivo. In uno spazio saturo di corpi allenati, vene pulsanti e respiri affannosi, Sports Group intreccia energia, ritmo e creatività, offrendo un’interpretazione originale e immersiva del rapporto tra sport e musica.
Jonas Mekas — Requiem

Ispirato al Requiem di Giuseppe Verdi, Requiem di Jonas Mekas è un’opera che esplora il tema della morte e della memoria attraverso una lente poetica e intimista. Realizzato nel 2019 (poco prima della scomparsa del suo autore), il film combina immagini visive potenti e un montaggio che riflette il dolore e la perdita. Mekas, figura leggendaria del cinema d’avanguardia, utilizza il suo approccio sperimentale al cinema per creare una riflessione personale e universale sulla fine della vita, celebrando la memoria di chi è passato. Un tributo cinematografico che si inserisce nel più ampio contesto della sua ricerca artistica sulla transitorietà del tempo e dell’esistenza.
Dovydas Strimaitis — Hairy

Hairy è una danza per quattro corpi e le loro chiome, creata dal coreografo lituano Dovydas Strimaitis. Un gioco di equilibrio tra ordine e caos, dove i capelli, così vivi eppure impossibili da controllare, si muovono da soli, come un’eco del corpo a cui appartengono. Sono un confine sottile tra noi e il mondo, qualcosa che ci separa e al tempo stesso ci lega a ciò che è esterno e apparentemente lontano. Lasciarli sciolti è da sempre un gesto potente. Nella cultura occidentale evoca libertà, ribellione, romanticismo. Lo sapeva Isadora Duncan, lo sapeva Pina Bausch, lo sanno, oggi, le scene metal e ballroom. In Hairy, Strimaitis trasforma questo simbolo in movimento: una danza ipnotica ed essenziale, dove ogni piccolo gesto apre a immagini e storie, lasciando che siano i capelli stessi a parlare.

Mantieni viva la tua voce: drammaturghe lituane
In collaborazione con l’Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica Silvio d’Amico
Il panorama della drammaturgia lituana ha subito cambiamenti significativi negli ultimi decenni. Se il XX secolo è stato dominato da nomi maschili e dalla ricerca di narrazioni storiche o politiche, il XXI secolo ha visto emergere con forza una voce femminile, caratterizzata da una sensibilità diversa, intimità, ma anche da una riflessione critica sui fenomeni sociali. Le drammaturghe affrontano temi a lungo marginalizzati — la fragilità della vita quotidiana, il corpo femminile e il suo status sociale, i paradossi della famiglia e dell’amore, ma anche riflessioni su traumi collettivi e sfide globali. I loro lavori combinano poesia, documentario, critica sociale, psicologismo intimo e forme sperimentali.
Le letture presentate al Romaeuropa Festival non offriranno una panoramica completa della drammaturgia lituana, ma introdurranno con coraggio nomi significativi della scrittura teatrale contemporanea in Lituania, con la speranza di suscitare l’interesse sia dei professionisti che del pubblico più ampio verso una drammaturgia che nasce in un paese piccolo ma coraggioso, scritta in una delle lingue più arcaiche d’Europa.

The Romaeuropa Festival opens a window onto the contemporary Lithuanian art scene: a journey through ancestral sounds, musical experimentation, poetic reflections, and hypnotic dance. From September 30 to October 5, the audience will be immersed in a special focus that unites tradition, innovation, and new artistic visions thanks to the special project Lithuanian Art and Culture at REF2025.
MEROPE — Vejula Live

The Lithuanian band MEROPE brings its minimalist folk to the Romaeuropa Festival, suspended between subtle harmonies and evocative electronics. The duo, made up of Indre Jurgeleviciute and Bert Cools, presents Vejula, the album acclaimed worldwide for its unique atmosphere of improvisations and ancestral sounds. A music that seems to breathe with nature.
Sports Group — Musical Performance

Sports Group brings the dynamism of sport into the world of music, transforming the stage into a sound laboratory where movement and sound merge into a single experience. The idea was born during a basketball game: the asynchronous bounce of balls, the shouts of players, the unpredictable rhythm of the game began to sound like a disordered melody. From this intuition, the Lithuanian ensemble — Gabriel Labanauskaite, Gaile Griciute, and Viktorija Damerell — created a project that explores the boundary between “music through sport” and “sport through music.”
Sports Group takes shape from fragments of experiences gathered in gyms, sports fields, blogs, vlogs, and advertisements, reflecting on the condition of modern humanity, suspended between body care and self-realization as sheer display and a source of anxiety. On stage, six gym machines are reinvented as musical instruments, giving life to a performance that blends the rules and imagery of the sports world. In a space saturated with trained bodies, throbbing veins, and labored breaths, Sports Group interweaves energy, rhythm, and creativity, offering an original and immersive interpretation of the relationship between sport and music.
Jonas Mekas — Requiem

Inspired by Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem, Jonas Mekas’ Requiem is a work that explores death and memory through a poetic and intimate lens. Created in 2019 (shortly before the author’s passing), the film combines powerful imagery with editing that reflects grief and loss. Mekas, a legendary figure of avant-garde cinema, uses his experimental approach to create a personal yet universal reflection on the end of life, celebrating the memory of those who have passed. A cinematic tribute within the broader context of his lifelong artistic research on the transience of time and existence.
Dovydas Strimaitis — Hairy
October 4–5, 2025
Hairy is a dance for four bodies and their manes, created by Lithuanian choreographer Dovydas Strimaitis. It is a play of balance between order and chaos, where hair — so alive yet impossible to control — moves on its own, like an echo of the body it belongs to. Hair becomes a subtle boundary between us and the world, something that both separates us and connects us to what is outside and seemingly distant.
Letting hair loose has always been a powerful gesture. In Western culture, it evokes freedom, rebellion, and romanticism. Isadora Duncan knew it, Pina Bausch knew it, and today it lives on in the metal and ballroom scenes. In Hairy, Strimaitis transforms this symbol into movement: a hypnotic and essential dance, where every small gesture opens up images and stories, leaving the hair itself to speak.

Keep Your Voice Alive: Lithuanian Playwrights

The landscape of Lithuanian playwriting has undergone significant changes in recent decades. If the 20th century was dominated by male voices and explorations of historical or political narratives, the 21st century has witnessed the powerful emergence of a female voice, characterized by sensitivity, intimacy, and critical reflections on social phenomena.
Lithuanian women playwrights address long-marginalized themes — the fragility of everyday life, the female body and its social status, the paradoxes of family and love, as well as reflections on collective trauma and global challenges. Their works combine poetry, documentary, social critique, intimate psychology, and experimental forms.
The readings presented at the Romaeuropa Festival will not provide a complete overview of Lithuanian dramaturgy, but will introduce, with courage, some significant voices of contemporary playwriting from Lithuania — with the hope of sparking interest among professionals and a wider audience in a dramaturgy born in a small yet bold country, written in one of Europe’s most ancient languages.
During the readings, excerpts from three works will be presented in stage-reading form:
