NO GODS ONLY MODS – An Introduction to Video Game Modification
A practical workshop dedicated to modding. Since the 1980s, video game mods have transformed predefined worlds into constantly evolving systems shaped by gaming communities. They allow players to expand and reinterpret rules, aesthetics and narratives originally established by developers.
During the workshop, participants will directly explore the practice of modding. They will learn how to use modification tools, navigate game files and experiment with existing code. This will enable them to create new experiences that challenge traditional concepts of authorship and control within digital environments.
Required materials: laptop (preferably with a Windows operating system).
2girls1comp is a modding duo founded in 2023 by Marco De Mutiis and Alexandra Pfammatter. Their practice modifies video game logic as an act of creative counter-play, revealing the social and economic structures in which games are embedded: from the reappropriation of global digital infrastructures to reflections on free labour within the capitalist ideologies of the gaming industry, as well as the exploration of the subtle ways in which games can influence their subjects through their own mechanics.
