When asked about his artistic career, Milo Rau has repeatedly spoken of the way in which his opus can be divided into two different central themes. On the one hand, a set of shows focused in their majority on personal or family issues and on the other, those that he himself defines as “activist” or “optimistic”. Antigone in the Amazon belongs to the latter area of ??his creative geography, as a show with which the Swiss director- who has just been appointed director of the Wiener Festwochen- closes his Trilogy of Ancient Myths, following The Congo Tribunal and Orestes in Mosul. Rau’s journey at the REF continues in the name of a theatre which, drawing from Western classicism, confronts the great themes of our present day. Antigone in the Amazon was created, not surprisingly, in the Brazilian state of Parà. Together with the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST), professional and non-professional actors and involving indigenous populations, Rau transports the Greek tragedy there, using it as an allegorical tool to contemplate the consequences produced by the conflict between uncontrolled development and the ancestral owners of Earth.
