The Glass menagerie

Famous director Ivo van Hove sets his re-production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie in a space that is underground and earthy, a kind of family nest for fragile human creatures. This underground refuge is governed by one of the most acclaimed actresses in the world, an icon of unforgettable auteur films and international filmmaking: Isabelle Huppert. In fact, van Hove entrusted her with the role of Amanda, a woman determined to arrange a marriage for her daughter Laura- so shy and fragile, escaping reality with her collection of glass animals. At their side is Laura’s brother Tom, who provides for the family and escapes to the cinema whenever he can. Here are three solitudes, as fragile and beautiful as glass toys with their dreams of another life. With the powerful performance of Isabelle Huppert and an equally exceptional cast of actors, van Hove seems to explore the very act of memory and recollection, as well as the theatrical space that encompasses the characters and becomes comfort and limit, a lair and a border of their existence.

«It is both an artistic challenge and a dream come true to work with Isabelle Huppert on this adaptation of one of Tennessee Williams’ most personal and autobiographical plays», says the director.
