The presentation of the volume Dall’umanità in poi. Bellezza, Intelligenza, Coscienza (Mimesis, 2023) by Fabrizio Giacomelli offers an opportunity to explore one of the most debated territories of the present: the relationship between artificial intelligence, consciousness, and the future of the human.
Halfway between a novel and a philosophical essay, the book imagines a future in which technological evolution leads to a radical redefinition of the categories through which we interpret the world. Set in the year 2100, Giacomelli’s narrative addresses themes ranging from artificial intelligence to philosophy of mind, from aesthetics to possible forms of coexistence between human beings and intelligent systems, questioning the cultural and cognitive transformations that may shape the next century.
The event will be an opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the author around the questions running through the book: what do we mean today by intelligence? Is it possible to imagine forms of non-biological consciousness? What role will creativity, art, and human sensitivity play in a world increasingly shaped by intelligent technologies?
The presentation will be accompanied by the projection of images and visual materials related to the book’s themes on a LED wall, creating a dialogue between text, vision, and technological imagination.
Fabrizio Giacomelli is a computer engineer, philosopher of mind, and entrepreneur. For over forty years he has worked in the field of artificial intelligence, combining theoretical research with the development of technology-driven applications oriented toward social impact. In 1988, he was among the founders of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence, within which he currently co-leads, together with Silvano Tagliagambe, the working group dedicated to the philosophical aspects of AI.
Following an academic path that integrates both technical-scientific and humanistic disciplines, he earned degrees in computer engineering and philosophy of mind. In 2000, he left his role as a manager at Ernst & Young to found Mediavoice, a company specializing in the development of technological solutions for visually impaired people based on voice technologies, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Among its most recent projects is SpeakyAI, a patented platform in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States that enables blind users to access digital services through natural language.
Alongside his entrepreneurial activity, he carries out theoretical research on intelligence, consciousness, and the relationship between humans and machines. In 2023, he published Dall’umanità in poi with Mimesis, a novel-essay set in 2100 dedicated to the future of artificial intelligence, aesthetics, and transformations of contemporary subjectivity. On these topics, he has also developed, together with Silvano Tagliagambe, a philosophical reflection that culminated in the presentation of a paper at the 2024 World Congress of Philosophy.
