Fatoumata Diawara returns to the Romaeuropa Festival with MASSA Live
On the occasion of the release of her new single Djanne, available online from February 27, we’re thrilled to announce the return of Fatoumata Diawara to the Romaeuropa Festival. One of the most authoritative and charismatic voices in contemporary African music, a true queen of world music and cross-genre exploration, and a two-time Golden Globe nominee who has collaborated with international stars such as Damon Albarn, Diawara will take the Festival stage once again on September 15. She will perform in the Sala Santa Cecilia at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone (in collaboration with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia), presenting her highly anticipated new album, MASSA, set for release in late spring 2026.
A significant presence in the history of the Romaeuropa Festival, Fatoumata Diawara makes every return a must-see event—an experience that brings together diverse audiences through both deep listening and dance. With her new single Djanne, a vibrant, forward-looking anthem that anticipates the upcoming album, the artist opens a chapter that is both intimate and universal, shaped by memory, gratitude, and the personal experience of leaving home while carrying one’s roots along. Mali has always been a land of travelers, and through Djanne, Diawara speaks to those who set out in search of opportunity, knowledge, or connection with the wider world.
The song unfolds like a blessing—almost a whispered piece of advice set to music—where the introspective depth of the lyrics intertwines with an energetic, uplifting production. Once again, Fatoumata Diawara shows her remarkable ability to transform a personal story into a message that resonates far beyond borders.
