Francesco is called Giovanni. He was born to a French mother when his father was in France selling fine fabrics. So they call him “Francesco”, in short, a French son who reads many books of chivalric literature. He becomes a knight-or would like to become one- he goes to war, but ends up in jail. When he gets out of prison he has to rebuild the houses of the nobles that the people have driven out of Assisi and in the process learns to be a bricklayer. Thus behold the saint who yearns to rebuild the Church of God on earth. But what if Francesco was born in 1982 instead of 1182? What if he came back as a poor person in a supermarket parking lot? What kind of creche would you make among the garbage bins? Ascanio Celestini, master of storytelling theatre, returns to the Romaeuropa festival on stage with three musicians, with a “story without a show”, a construction of drama and sound.
