Nearly thirty years ago, La Haine (Hate) by Mathieu Kassovitz shook French cinema with its raw portrayal of the Parisian banlieue. A manifesto film, it gave voice to a generation caught between anger and disillusionment, winning the 1995 Cannes Film Festival and taking home three César Awards, including Best Film. To celebrate this anniversary, the Asian Dub Foundation presents a live soundtrack performance that weaves their music with the images of the film, projected in the original language with Italian subtitles. Pioneers of blending electronic, dub, hip-hop, and Asian sounds, the Asian Dub Foundation shares with La Haine the same spirit of rebellion and social critique. Their sound enhances and amplifies the tension of the story, which follows the twenty-four hours of three friends—Vinz, Saïd, and Hubert—through the suburbs of Paris, amidst clashes, broken dreams, and the search for a possible future. A dialogue between cinema and music that gives new intensity to Kassovitz’s images.
