Azkona & Toloza

Extraños Mares Arden

Already with Tierras del Sud (presented during Romaeuropa Festival 2020) the Iberian-South American duo Azkona & Toloza showed how theaterical performance can be transformed into a device capable of overturning dominant narratives and the images that the West has created to describe itself. REF21 hosts the two shows that complete the Pacìfico trilogy, inaugurated in 2014 to investigate the consequences of neo-colonialism and capitalism in Chile, Argentina and Brazil.
With a style of ‘documentary theater’ rooted in South American tradition but reinvented in the shapes and symbols that animate the Txalo scene, Toloza-Fernández and Laida Azkona Goñi condense the complexity of South American history and its relations with the West. The first chapter of the journey Extraños Mares Arden weaves the history of the Guggenheim family with that of the desert of Atacama to demonstrate the links between the mining industry and the contemporary art system.
