Taoufiq Izeddiou

Hors du monde

Taoufiq Izeddiou, who is a point of reference for contemporary dance in Morocco- where he founded the On Marche festival- combines tradition and contemporary research in his creations. Hors du Monde is a piece inspired by the Moroccan Sufi ritual: a musician and a dancer are surrounded by the audience as they elaborate on tradition, seeking in the music and the body a state of mystical consciousness, a collective trance that leads to spiritual ascendance.

Bio

Taoufiq Izeddiou is a choreographer, dancer, educator, and artistic director of the Anania Danses company and the On Marche International Contemporary Dance Festival. It was in Marrakech, his hometown, that Taoufiq Izeddiou discovered his passion for contemporary dance through what he calls a wild education. In 1997, his encounter with Bernardo Montet, director of the National Choreographic Center of Tours, opened the doors to the professional dance scene. In 2002, his solo performance in Suzanne Buirge’s “Danse Nord” put him on the map of the choreographic world. In addition to his career as a dancer, Taoufiq Izeddiou created his first choreography in 2000. In 2003, the success of his group piece “Fina K’enti” encouraged him to found Anania, the first contemporary dance company in Morocco. In 2005, he created the On Marche International Contemporary Dance Festival in Marrakech, which he has been directing ever since. As an educator who is committed to transmission, he established the first contemporary dance training program in Morocco, Al-Mokhtabar (the Laboratory), between 2003 and 2005. Since then, he has continued to develop other training programs, including Nafass (Breath). Starting from 2008, Taoufiq Izeddiou expanded his company to France and continued his choreographic work with pieces such as Cœur sans corps, Clandestins CSC, Déserts désirs, Aataba, Aaléef, Rev’illusion, En Alerte, Botero en Orient, Border_Line,” and Hmadcha. His pieces have been performed in prestigious contemporary dance venues such as Danse Afrique, Montpellier Danse, Charleroi Danse, Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-St-Denis, the National Dance Center of Paris, Tanzquartier Vienna, HAU Berlin, and Transamériques in Canada, among others. In 2019, Taoufiq Izeddiou was awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
