Dal 19 al 22 ottobre gli spazi del Mattatoio diventano luogo per scoprire insieme i nuovi linguaggi della danza europea. Ti aspettano tanti spettacoli per conoscere la nuova generazione di coreografe e coreografi e danzatrici e danzatori.
? Smaïl Kanouté Proiezione :”Utaki”
? 18 ottobre | Sala cinema Michel Piccoli – Villa Medici
Utaki è un trittico di cortometraggi danzanti del coreografo e grafico o “coreo-grafico” Smaïl Kanouté. Questi tre video rivelano la dolorosa situazione delle diaspore africane attraverso le epoche e il mondo. Never Twenty One (Smaïl Kanouté, Henri Coutant et Kevin Gay – inglese / ST inglese) evoca la violenza delle armi nel Bronx. Yasuke Kurosan (Smaïl Kanouté et Abdou Diouri – japanese / ST inglese) ci porta in Giappone sulle tracce dei samurai africani e dell’attuale mix afro-giapponese. So Ava (Smaïl Kanouté et Henri Coutant – francese / ST inglese) esamina la filosofia voodoo nella danza contemporanea.
La proiezione si conclude con il cortometraggio Banîles (7’27 – francese / ST inglese), girato a Villa Medici durante una residenza nel marzo 2022, in collaborazione con il critico e poeta Chris Cyrille e gli Ateliers Médicis. Basato sul racconto della Divina Commedia di Dante, quest’opera metaforica ritrae i piani dei grattacieli della periferia francese e dell’Atlantico.
? Anna-Marija Adomaityte Pas de deux

Su uno sfondo blu intenso un uomo e una donna compiono i gesti di una coreografia di coppia. Il pubblico ascolta il loro respiro, percepisce i movimenti impazienti dei corpi, osserva gli sguardi affievolirsi. I movimenti frenetici si tramutano presto in stanchezza e mettono a rischio la stessa pièce. Perchè il Pas de deux di Adomaityte sembra liberarsi dal romanticismo retorico e opprimente, dalla sua imposizione, lasciando emergere ciò che è sotteso o taciuto.
? Smail Kanouté Never 21

Never 21 è un omaggio alle giovani vittime della violenza armata nei quartieri poveri e discriminati di città come New York, Rio de Janeiro o Johannesburg. Non a caso il coreografo Smail Kanouté si riferisce all’hashtag #Never21, creato dal movimento Black Live Matters a segnalare le vite dei ventunenni spezzate in modo violento e ingiusto. Da simbolo di protezione divina e fortuna, il numero 21 diventa un simbolo maledetto che rappresenta l’impossibilità di veder crescere giovani nella pienezza della loro esistenza. Kanoutè costruisce la sua coreografia a partire dalle testimonianze delle famiglie delle vittime.
? Diego Tortelli Body into the fight

Il progetto Dis.abile | Iper.abile, con al centro la performance firmata da Diego Tortelli Body into the fight, è una sorta di amplificatore di alcuni temi sui quali abbiamo lavorato. Ricerche incentrate su spazi particolari, o su linguaggi attigui al nostro, ma sempre corroborate dall’osservazione dei corpi, materia generatrice della danza. In sottofondo, come un leitmotiv, troviamo il dovere, come istituzione culturale, di non arroccarci nel nostro mondo e di occuparci di temi sociali.

? Le parole di Ada per la danza Gaia Clotilde Chernetich, Francesca Manica

Collaboratrice di lungo corso di Romaeuropa Festival, per cui ha curato numerose edizioni, e vincitrice di diversi premi letterari tra cui il Premio Strega 2023 col suo romanzo Come d’Aria, Ada d’Adamo (1967-2023) è stata un’intellettuale – danzatrice, studiosa e scrittrice – che ha fatto della danza non solo un oggetto di studio o materia di lavoro, ma una vera e propria prospettiva di osservazione del mondo. La sua scrittura, nata per e attraverso la danza, sarà al centro di un simposio che radunerà numerosi artisti che l’hanno conosciuta da vicino e che con lei hanno condiviso tratti più o meno lunghi del proprio percorso artistico.

? Olga Dukhovnaya, Anton Svetlichny Swan Lake solo

Nata in Ucraina nel 1984 e attualmente residente in Francia a Rennes, Olga Dukhovnaya – selezione Aerowaves 2023 – costruisce il suo Swan Lake Solo come un dialogo tra scrittura coreografica e attualità. Il titolo scelto dalla coreografa, già collaboratrice di Boris Charmatz, Maud Le Pladec e Ashley Chen, non deve infatti trarre in inganno. Swan Lake Solo non è un assolo dedicato alla principessa Odette, nè una versione contemporanea del balletto di Tchaikovsky ma una pièce intessuta con il Presente e la sua complessità.
? Panzetti/Ticconi Insel

Gli italiani Panzetti/Ticconi tornano al Romaeuropa Festival, nell’ambito di Dancing Days, in veste di coreografi per presentare Insel, pièce per quattro performer incentrata sul concetto di isola. In italiano, inglese e tedesco la connessione linguistica e storica tra le parole Isola/Island/Insel e isolamento sottolinea il legame simbolico tra l’isolamento imposto o interiore e un volontario distacco dal mondo. Da Robinson Crusoe a Shakespeare passando per le ricerche del geografo e storico Jared Diamond, lo spettacolo costruisce uno spazio fittizio di isola deserta ed esplora il personaggio del naufrago o dell’esiliato, il senso di un’isola, la sua geografia emotiva, spirituale e fisica.
? Daniel Mariblanca 71BODIES 1DANCE

71 corpi, 71 storie e altrettanti minuti di danza: sono queste le premesse con le quali Daniel Mariblanca costruisce il suo 71BODIES 1DANCE, un progetto in bilico tra scrittura coreografica e arti visive, sviluppato a partire da storie reali raccolte tra la Scandinavia (non a caso lo spettacolo è presentato con il patrocinio dell’Ambasciata di Norvegia) e il continente europeo durante più anni di produzione.

IRENE affronta la perdita. Attraversa lo spazio creato dalla mancanza. Il corpo sente, rivela, stabilisce un contatto con l’assenza che attraverso la danza torna presente. La danza è il tentativo di relazionarsi con l’invisibile, di affrontare il tempo. Sembra assurdo ricostruire il senso di un passato di gioia, follia, rabbia che tornano e sconvolgono. In un istante IRENE si slega dalla linearità per intraprendere un percorso caotico che diventa celebrazione.

From October 19 to 22, the spaces of the Mattatoio became a place to discover together the new languages of European dance. Many performances await you to meet the new generation of choreographers and dancers.
? Smaïl Kanouté projection : Utaki
? Oct. 18 | Michel Piccoli Cinema Hall – Villa Medici
Utaki is a triptych of dancing short films by choreographer and graphic or “choreo-graphic” artist Smaïl Kanouté. These three videos reveal the painful plight of African diasporas across eras and the world. Never Twenty-One (Smaïl Kanouté, Henri Coutant et Kevin Gay – English / ST English) evokes gun violence in the Bronx. Yasuke Kurosan (Smaïl Kanouté et Abdou Diouri – Japanese / ST English) takes us to Japan on the trail of African samurai and the current Afro-Japanese mix. So Ava (Smaïl Kanouté et Henri Coutant – French / ST English) examines voodoo philosophy in contemporary dance.
The projection concludes with the short film Banîles (7’27 – French/English ST), shot at Villa Medici during a residency in March 2022 in collaboration with critic and poet Chris Cyrille and the Ateliers Médicis. Based on Dante’s Divine Comedy story, this metaphorical work depicts the skyscraper planes of the French and Atlantic suburbs.
? Diego Tortelli Body into the fight

The Dis.abile | Hyper.abile project, with the performance signed by Diego Tortelli Body into the fight at its center, amplifies some of the themes we have been working on. The research focused on particular spaces or languages adjacent to ours but was always corroborated by observing bodies, the generating matter of dance. In the background, like a leitmotif, we find the duty, as a cultural institution, not to entrench ourselves in our own world and to deal with social issues.

Against a deep blue background, a man and a woman perform the gestures of a choreographed couple. The audience listens to their breathing, senses the impatient movements of the bodies, and watches the glances fade. The frenzied movements soon turn into fatigue and jeopardize the play itself. Adomaityte’s Pas de deux seems to free itself from rhetorical and oppressive romanticism, from its imposition, allowing what is underlying or unspoken to emerge.
? Smail Kanouté Never 21

Never 21 is a tribute to the young victims of gun violence in poor and discriminated neighborhoods in cities such as New York, Rio de Janeiro, or Johannesburg. It is no coincidence that choreographer Smail Kanouté refers to the hashtag #Never21, created by the Black Lives Matter movement to mark the lives of 21-year-olds violently and unjustly broken. From a symbol of divine protection and good fortune, the number 21 becomes a cursed symbol representing the impossibility of seeing young people grow into the fullness of their existence. Kanoutè builds his choreography from the testimonies of the victims’ families.

A longtime collaborator of the Romaeuropa Festival, for which she curated numerous editions, and the winner of several literary prizes, including the Premio Strega 2023 with her novel Come d’Aria, Ada d’Adamo (1967-2023) was an intellectual – dancer, scholar, and writer – who made dance not only an object of study or subject of work but a proper perspective of observation of the world. Her writing, born for and through dance, will be at the center of a symposium that will gather numerous artists who knew her closely and share longer or shorter stretches of their artistic journey with her.

? Olga Dukhovnaya, Anton Svetlichny Swan Lake solo

Born in Ukraine in 1984 and currently residing in Rennes, France, Olga Dukhovnaya – Aerowaves 2023 selection – constructs her Swan Lake Solo as a dialogue between choreographic writing and actuality. Indeed, the title chosen by the choreographer, a former collaborator of Boris Charmatz, Maud Le Pladec, and Ashley Chen, should not mislead. Swan Lake Solo is not a solo dedicated to Princess Odette, nor a contemporary version of Tchaikovsky’s ballet, but a piece interwoven with the Present and its complexity.
? Panzetti/Ticconi Insel

Italians Panzetti/Ticconi return to the Romaeuropa Festival as part of Dancing Days, as choreographers to present Insel, a pièce for four performers centered on the concept of the island. In Italian, English, and German, the linguistic and historical connection between the words Island/Insland/Insel and isolation emphasizes the symbolic link between imposed or inner isolation and a voluntary detachment from the world. From Robinson Crusoe to Shakespeare via the research of geographer and historian Jared Diamond, the play constructs a fictional desert island space. It explores the character of the castaway or exile, the meaning of an island, and its emotional, spiritual, and physical geography.
? Daniel Mariblanca 71BODIES 1DANCE

71 bodies, 71 stories, and as many minutes of dance: these are the premises with which Daniel Mariblanca builds his 71BODIES 1DANCE, a project poised between choreographic writing and visual arts, developed from real stories collected between Scandinavia (not coincidentally, the show is presented under the patronage of the Embassy of Norway) and the European continent during several years of production.

IRENE faces loss. She crosses the space created by absence. The body feels, reveals, and establishes contact with the lack that, through dance, becomes present again. Dance is an attempt to relate to the invisible, to face time. It seems absurd to reconstruct the sense of a past of joy, madness, and anger that return and unsettle. In an instant, IRENE unties from linearity to embark on a chaotic path that becomes a celebration.
