La settimana inaugurale del Romaeuropa Festival 2023 inizia con le coreografie di Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui e Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker e della musica di Jeff Mills.
L’Opening è affidato a Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui che con il suo spettacolo Ukiyo-e (letteralmente: immagini del mondo fluttuante) si ispira al Giappone dell’era Edo (1603-1868): diciotto interpreti in scena, provenienti dal prestigioso Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève (la cui presenza è sostenuta dal Cantone e la Città di Ginevra e l’Istituto Svizzero), danno vita a un’opera contemporanea in cui le composizioni di Szymon Brzóska e Alexandre Dai Castaing si fondono ai suoni della tradizione, interpretati dal maestro dei Taiko, compositore e cantante Shogo Yoshii e nella quale danza e imponenti scenografie raccontano l’impermanenza della vita, la sua fugacità, la capacità dell’essere umano di celebrare la bellezza anche nei momenti di crisi.
Torna in cavea anche Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker per proseguire con EXIT ABOVE – after the tempest la sua ricerca sul rapporto tra musica e movimento. Con le danzatrici e i danzatori della sua compagnia Rosas, la coreografa si concentra, questa volta, sulle radici della musica pop e blues occidentale passando da Robert Johnson a Schubert. Accompagnano questo viaggio la cantautrice fiamminga Meskerem Mees che comporrà una serie di variazioni e adattamenti delle “walking songs” e Jean-Marie Aerts, sound designer dei TC Matic.
Due spettacoli che ci introducono immediatamente nel percorso dedicato all’esplorazione della scena fiamminga costruito grazie alla relazione triennale (2023-2025) intessuta con Flanders State of the Art e nelle proposte sostenute da Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels il progetto attraverso il quale la celebre Maison sostiene artisti ed istituzioni nella diffusione del patrimonio coreografico scegliendo, per il secondo anno, Romaeuropa come partner italiano del progetto.
Concludiamo questo primo tragitto con il maestro della Detroit techno Jeff Mills, che con i musicisti Jean-Phi Dary e Prabhu Edouard dà nuova vita e prosegue il percorso avviato insieme al pioniere dell’Afrobeat Tony Allen. TOMORROW COMES THE HARVEST è un progetto incentrato sulla trascendenza mentale, sul dialogo, sull’esplorazione di geografie sonore ed emotive ancora da disegnare.
REF OPENING 2023 | WEEK 1
The opening week of Romaeuropa Festival 2023 begins with choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and music by Jeff Mills.
We begin with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s choreography Ukiyo-e (literally: images of the floating world) inspired by Edo-era Japan (1603-1868): eighteen performers on stage, from the prestigious Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève (whose presence is supported by the Canton and City of Geneva and the Swiss Institute), bring to life a contemporary work in which the compositions of Szymon Brzóska and Alexandre Dai Castaing blend with the sounds of tradition, interpreted by Taiko master, composer and singer Shogo Yoshii, and in which dance and impressive sets tell of the impermanence of life, its fleetingness, and the ability of human beings to celebrate beauty even in moments of crisis.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker also returns to the Cavea to continue with EXIT ABOVE – after the tempest, her research on the relationship between music and movement. With dancers from her company Rosas, the choreographer focuses this time on the roots of Western pop and blues music, moving from Robert Johnson to Schubert. Accompanying this journey will be Flemish singer-songwriter Meskerem Mees, who will compose a series of variations and adaptations of “walking songs,” and Jean-Marie Aerts, sound designer of TC Matic.
Two shows that immediately introduce us to the path dedicated to the exploration of the Flemish scene built thanks to the three-year relationship (2023-2025) woven with Flanders State of the Art and in the proposals supported by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels the project through which the famous Maison supports artists and institutions in the dissemination of choreographic heritage choosing, for the second year, Romaeuropa as the Italian partner of the project.
We conclude this first journey with Detroit techno master Jeff Mills, who, with musicians Jean-Phi Dary and Prabhuo Edouard, breathes new life into and continues the journey he started with Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen. TOMORROW COMES THE HARVEST is a project focused on mental transcendence, dialogue, and the exploration of sonic and emotional geographies yet to be drawn.
