Milo Rau

The Congo Tribunal

The war in the Congo has caused over six million deaths throughout the last twenty years. The population is torn while the transgressors remain unpunished. Milo Rau, one of the most acclaimed theatre directors in Europe, has managed to unite the victims, perpetrators, observers and scholars of the conflict.

The Swiss director succeeds in holding a symbolic tribunal in eastern Congo with the participation of all parties involved in the conflict. Presided over by a half-Congolese and half-international panel of experts as well as the two lawyers of the International Criminal Court, the central lines of the conflict in the Congo War were examined in Bukavu, based on hearings with victims, witnesses, militia officers, politicians, UN and NGO members, commodity traders and local human rights activists.

The result is an artistic project in which fiction and reality become one, where cinema and theatre become tools for bearing a real and political impact on the present.
