Aprendo la cartina delle “geografie del nostro tempo” iniziamo a navigare tra gli spettacoli del REF2023 a partire da alcune proposte di teatro internazionale. Ancora una volta la bussola che orienta la nostra esplorazione è il dialogo, l’incontro tra generazioni, linguaggi ed estetiche; tra grandi maestri e nuove proposte.
Non possiamo che partire dal maestro Peter Brook, tra le figure più emblematiche e rivoluzionarie della storia del teatro contemporaneo e di quella dello stesso Romaeuropa Festival che sceglie di dedicargli un omaggio a partire dalla presentazione del suo ultimo spettacolo Tempest Project, rivisitazione del celebre testo shakespeariano, in cui si condensano le estetiche e le pratiche care al regista inglese. «La tempesta è un enigma, è una favola in cui nulla sembra poter essere preso alla lettera e se rimani in superficie la sua qualità nascosta ti sfugge – aveva scritto nelle note di regia insieme alla regista, drammaturga e sua assistente Marie-Hélène Estienne- Una parola che ricorre molto spesso nella commedia è la parola “libertà” e come sempre con Shakespeare la parola non è usata in modo ovvio, diventa una suggestione che riecheggia in tutta la pièce come un’eco». Ed è il segno di apertura, dialogo, confronto che nutre il teatro del grande maestro e la sua eredità ad essere stella polare del nostro percorso in questa edizione del festival.

E a proposito di grandi maestri continuiamo a navigare con un importante ritorno: quello di Ivo van Hove (vera e propria star del panorama teatrale internazionale) che per il suo riallestimento de Lo zoo di vetro di Tennessee Williams porta in scena Isabelle Huppert, tra le attrici più celebri al mondo, icona di indimenticabili film d’autore e delle scene internazionali. Il ricordo e la memoria, il teatro che li mette in scena, sono le lenti attraverso le quali il celebre regista reinterpreta la pièce, secondo le sue stesse parole “tra le più personali e autobiografiche di Tennesee Williams” ambientandola in uno spazio sotterraneo e terroso, nido familiare per fragili creature umane.
Prosegue il percorso di collaborazioni e coproduzioni con il REF anche il regista Milo Rau. Debutta finalmente anche in Italia il suo Antigone in the Amazon, ultimo capitolo della Trilogia dei Miti Antichi. Realizzato in Brasile insieme al MST – Movimento dei Lavoratori Rurali Senza Terra, ad attori professionisti e non professionisti e coinvolgendo le popolazioni indigene, Rau trasporta la tragedia greca utilizzandola come strumento allegorico per costruire un affondo sulle conseguenze prodotte dal conflitto tra sviluppo senza controllo e gli ancestrali proprietari della terra.

Ma (a nostro parere) imperdibile è anche la prima volta al festival di una delle più originale registe dell’attuale panorama Europeo. Debutta al REF, Susanne Kennedy che insieme all’artista visivo Markus Selg con Angela (a strange loop) ci invita nel suo universo visionario, multimediale e post-umano articolando, con straordinaria potenza, nuove riflessioni e domande sulla nostra esistenza e sul nostro essere umani. Con la sua personalissima estetica, Kennedy sembra zoommare all’infinito la vita di una donna (una influencer o forse una youtuber), la sua “iper-infiammazione”, la sua intima quotidianità al di là del visibile e del pensabile, il suo essere sospesa tra molecole di realtà e di virtualità.

Opening the map of the “geographies of our time,” we begin to navigate the shows of REF2023, starting with some international theater proposals. Once again, the compass guiding our exploration is dialogue, the encounter between generations, languages, and aesthetics, between great masters and new proposals.
We cannot but start with the master Peter Brook, among the most emblematic and revolutionary figures in the history of contemporary theater and that of the Romaeuropa Festival itself, which chooses to dedicate a tribute to him starting with the presentation of his latest show Tempest Project, a reinterpretation of the famous Shakespearean text, in which the aesthetics and practices dear to the English director are condensed. «The Tempest is an enigma; it is a fable in which nothing seems to be able to be taken literally, and if you remain on the surface, its hidden quality escapes you – he had written in the director’s notes together with the director, playwright and his assistant Marie-Hélène Estienne- a word that recurs very often in the play is the word “freedom”, as always with Shakespeare, the word is not used in an obvious way; it becomes a suggestion that echoes throughout the play like an echo.» And it is the sign of openness, dialogue, and confrontation that nourishes the theater of the great master and his legacy that is the guiding star of our path in this edition of the festival.

Speaking of great masters, we continue sailing on with a major comeback: that of Ivo van Hove (a true star of the international theater scene), who, for his staging of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, brings to the stage Isabelle Huppert, among the world’s most awarded actresses, an icon of unforgettable art-house films and international scenes. Remembrance and memory, the theater that stages them, are the lenses through which the celebrated director reinterprets the play, in his own words, “among Tennesee Williams’ most personal and autobiographical” by setting it in an underground, earthy space, a familiar nest for fragile human creatures.
Director Milo Rau also continues his path of collaborations and co-productions with the REF. His Antigone in the Amazon, the latest chapter of the Ancient Myths Trilogy, finally debuts in Italy. Made in Brazil together with the MST – Movement of Rural Landless Workers, professional and nonprofessional actors and involving indigenous peoples, Rau transports the Greek tragedy using it as a symbolic tool to build a lunge on the consequences produced by the conflict between development without control and the ancestral owners of the land.

But (in our opinion) also not to be missed is the first time at the festival of one of the most original female directors on the current European scene. Debuting at the REF, Susanne Kennedy, together with visual artist Markus Selg with Angela (a strange loop), invites us into her visionary, multimedia, and the post-human universe, articulating, with extraordinary power, new reflections and questions about our existence and our being human. With his highly personal aesthetic, Kennedy seems to infinitely zoom in on a woman’s life (an influencer or perhaps a YouTuber), her “hyper-inflammation,” her intimate everydayness beyond the visible and thinkable, her being suspended between molecules of reality and virtuality.
