Dalle produzioni classiche reinterpretate in chiave moderna, alle nuove creazioni che sfidano i confini delle arti performative: il Romaeuropa Festival 2023 promette di essere una vetrina straordinaria della creatività teatrale internazionale e nazionale. Tre le artiste e gli artisti che questa settimana aggiungono nuovi territori alla nostra mappa e ci aiutano ad orientarci nelle geografie del nostro tempo.
Fondata in Puglia da Michele Altamura e Gabriele Paolocà, la compagnia VicoQuartoMazzini porta in scena uno dei più acclamati romanzi degli ultimi anni, Premio Strega nel 2015: La Ferocia di Nicola Lagioia. “Nel pensare la regia dello spettacolo abbiamo scelto di mettere al centro, nella sua assordante assenza, il corpo di Clara, chiuso nello sguardo di tutti quelli che hanno creduto di poterlo possedere. Intorno, l’abissale e cruenta vanità del potere rappresentata dagli altri membri della famiglia e da tutti coloro che sono coinvolti nei loro affari. A fare da contraltare un figliastro tornato come un Oreste contemporaneo a gridare vendetta e un giornalista ossessionato da una frenetica fame di verità e da un amore sconfinato per la terra in cui è nato. Con La Ferocia ci concediamo la possibilità di raccontare il Sud non come un’eccezione ma come la regola.” Racconta la compagnia nelle note di regia.
Torna con Il Grande Vuoto anche la regista Fabiana Iacozzilli per chiudere la sua trilogia composta da La Classe (visto al REF nell’ambito della sezione Anni Luce) e Una cosa enorme (in programma al Teatro Vascello per il REF2021). Con la sua scrittura ancorata al teatro di figura, la potenza visionaria delle sue macchine sceniche, la regista, torna a perlustrare le zone d’ombra della nostra esistenza, a raccontare le aspirazioni, i sogni e i fallimenti, la fragilità, la forza e tutta l’energia che ci rende umani.
Infine, il ritorno dell’indiscusso Maestro del teatro di narrazione: Ascanio Celestini presenta in prima nazionale – in corealizzazione con Fondazione Musica per Roma – il suo L’Asino e il bue. Un nuovo racconto dedicato a Francesco, il santo che scelse di servire i poveri. Un uomo controcorrente, perché pur essendo ricco, scelse non solo di essere povero, ma di farsi servo dei poveri. Ma perché Francesco ci affascina ancora dopo otto secoli? E dove lo troveremmo oggi? Ponendosi queste domande, nei panni del personaggio-narratore, Celestini racconta il Francesco di oggi, che trova i propri personaggi in strada, tra le case popolari, tra coloro che, oggi come ieri, nessuno vede.
Three performances are to be noticed at REF2023.
From classic productions reinterpreted in a modern key to new creations that challenge the boundaries of performing arts: the Romaeuropa Festival 2023 promises to be an extraordinary showcase of international and national theatrical creativity. Three artists add new territories to our map this week and help us orient ourselves in the geographies of our time.
Founded in Puglia by Michele Altamura and Gabriele Paolocà, the VicoQuartoMazzini company brings to the stage one of the most acclaimed novels of recent years, Premio Strega in 2015: La Ferocia by Nicola Lagioia. “In thinking about the direction of the play, we chose to put Clara’s body at the center, in its loud absence, locked in the gaze of all those who believed they could possess it. Around, the abysmal and bloody vanity of power is represented by the other family members and all those involved in their affairs. Counterbalancing this is a stepson returned like a contemporary Orestes to cry out for vengeance and a journalist obsessed with a furious hunger for truth and boundless love for the land of his birth. With La Ferocia we allow ourselves to tell the story of the South not as an exception but as a rule.” Says the company in the director’s notes.
Director Fabiana Iacozzilli also returns with Il Grande Vuoto to close her trilogy composed of La Classe (seen at REF as part of the Anni Luce section) and Una cosa enorme (scheduled at Teatro Vascello for REF2021). With her writing anchored in figure theater, the visionary power of her scenic machines, the director, returns to scour the shadowy areas of our existence, to recount the aspirations, dreams and failures, fragility, strength and all the energy that makes us human.
Finally, the return of the undisputed master of narrative theater: Ascanio Celestini presents the national premiere – in collaboration with Fondazione Musica per Roma – of his L’Asino e il bue. A new tale dedicated to Francesco, the saint who chose to serve people experiencing poverty. A man against the tide because although he was rich, he decided not only to be poor, but to make himself a servant of the poor. But why does Francis still fascinate us after eight centuries? And where would we find him today? Asking himself these questions, in the shoes of the character-narrator, Celestini recounts the Francesco of today, who finds his characters in the streets, among the working class, among those whom, today as yesterday, no one sees.
