Nella sua proposta dedicata al Teatro Italiano il Romaeuropa Festival 2024 traccia un percorso caratterizzato dal dialogo con la letteratura. Non solo i ritorni al Festival di Alessandro Baricco o di Mariangela Gualtieri, ma anche registe che si confrontano con alcuni romanzi di autori e autrici che appartengono o sono entrate a far parte del nostro patrimonio culturale.
Tucidide. Atene contro Melo è tratto da La guerra del Peloponneso scritto da Tucidide nel V secolo a.C., è una cronaca dettagliata e appassionante del conflitto tra Atene e Sparta, un’opera che ha segnato la storiografia e la letteratura occidentale. Tucidide non solo racconta gli eventi bellici, ma analizza le cause e le conseguenze del conflitto, offrendo una riflessione profonda sulla natura umana, il potere, e la politica.
In questa messa in scena Alessandro Baricco concentra l’attenzione sul drammatico dialogo tra Atene e l’isola di Melo. Portare in scena questo spettacolo è un’opportunità per riflettere su temi che sono ancora oggi incredibilmente attuali. La lotta per il potere, l’inevitabilità del conflitto, e le scelte morali che determinano il corso della storia sono questioni che risuonano profondamente nel nostro tempo. Il teatro offre un mezzo potente per esplorare queste dinamiche, rendendo vivi i dibattiti e le emozioni di quel periodo storico. Per immergersi in questa pagine storiche, il grande scrittore italiano incontra i 100 Cellos, ensemble di cento violoncellisti fondato da Giovanni Sollima ed Enrico Melozzi che qui li dirige. Sulle sue note musicali composte dal Maestro Sollima si articola il racconto dello scontro, avvenuto nel 416 a.c, tra gli ateniesi e gli abitanti dell’isola di Melo impersonati qui da Valeria Solarino e Stefania Rocca.
11 settembre 2024 – Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone
La Vegetariana tratto dall’omonimo libro scritto da Han Kang, è un romanzo che esplora i temi dell’identità, della ribellione e della trasformazione attraverso la storia di Yeong-hye, una donna sudcoreana che decide di smettere di mangiare carne, innescando un processo di estraniazione e metamorfosi. Attraverso tre differenti punti di vista Han Kang descrive una trasformazione insondabile, sconcertante quanto affascinante, un gesto potente e misterioso che riverbera sulle relazioni sociali e persino sul rapporto tra vita e sogno.
Daria Deflorian torna al Romaeuropa Festival in veste di regista e attrice per portare in scena insieme a Monica Piseddu, Paolo Musio e Gabriele Portoghese questo gesto misterioso, potente, irrazionale quanto politico.
Dal 29 ottobre al 3 novembre – Teatro Vascello
Bello Mondo è un’improvvisazione a tre voci, poetica e musicale, tratta dal lavoro della poetessa Mariangela Gualtieri. La raccolta di poesie Bello Mondo celebra la bellezza del mondo attraverso una lente di profonda spiritualità e introspezione. Con la sua scrittura delicata e potente, Gualtieri esplora temi universali come la natura, l’amore, la bellezza e la fragilità dell’esistenza umana. Le sue poesie sono un invito a rallentare, ad ascoltare il mondo con nuovi occhi e a trovare la meraviglia nei piccoli dettagli della vita quotidiana. Nella versione teatrale, la stessa Gualtieri recita i suoi versi, accompagnata dalle evocative sonorità di Paolo Fresu e Uri Caine. Un’esperienza sensoriale e meditativa che promette di toccare le corde più intime dell’anima.
24 settembre 2024 – Teatro Argentina
Cime Tempestose tratto dall’omonimo libro di Emily Bronte è capolavoro gotico, è una storia di amore appassionato e vendetta, ambientata nelle selvagge brughiere dello Yorkshire. Cresciuta in un contesto che mescolava la selvaggia natura della regione con i fermenti della rivoluzione industriale, costretta a celare la sua attività di autrice sotto uno pseudonimo maschile, Brontë rifletteva profondamente sull’alienazione emergente nella società capitalistica dell’epoca. Non è quindi un caso se la regista Martina Badiluzzi si sia rivolta a questo romanzo e alla sua autrice per il quarto capitolo del suo ciclo sulle identità femminili (“Cattiva sensibilità”, “The making of Anastasia” – vincitore del bando Biennale di Venezia Registi Under 30 nel 2019 – e “Penelope” – co-prodotto da Romaeuropa Festival 2022). Il suo “Cime Tempestose” è un dialogo tra interiore ed esteriore, una riflessione sull’ambivalenza della natura umana. Trasportando gli spettatori al centro dell’universo tormentato di Catherine e Heathcliff (qui interpretati da Arianna Pozzoli e Loris De Luna), Badiluzzi rende omaggio alla potenza intrinseca della letteratura e dell’arte, concludendo il suo percorso sulle identità con due figure tragiche del contemporaneo «mito fondante della nostra società, racconto del profondo fraintendimento tra femminile e maschile, tra natura e civiltà».

Altri Libertini prende ispirazione da Altri libertini di Pier Vittorio Tondelli, una raccolta di racconti che esplora le vite disordinate e appassionate dei giovani italiani negli anni ’70 – ’80. Con uno stile crudo e poetico, Tondelli cattura l’energia di una generazione in cerca di identità e libertà. Licia Lanera porta sul palco questo vibrante “Romanzo” (così lo immaginava e definiva lo stesso Tondelli) concentrandosi su tre racconti Viaggio, Altri Libertini e Autobahn e intervenendo drammaturgicamente riunendoli in un unico spettacolo che la vede in scena con Giandomenico Cupaiuolo, Danilo Giuva e Roberto Magnani.

REF beyond the pages: Literature and Theatre a meeting not to be missed
The Romaeuropa Festival 2024, with its focus on Italian theatre and literature, offers a unique exploration of our cultural heritage. The program features the return of Alessandro Baricco and Mariangela Gualtieri to the Festival, as well as directors who engage with novels from our cultural legacy.
Tucidide. Atene contro Melo is based on The Peloponnesian War, written by Thucydides in the 5th century B.C. It is a detailed and impassioned chronicle of the conflict between Athens and Sparta, a work that has marked Western historiography and literature. Thucydides not only recounts the events of the war but also analyses the causes and consequences of the conflict, offering a profound reflection on human nature, power, and politics.
In this staging, Alessandro Baricco focuses on the dramatic dialogue between Athens and the island of Melo. Staging this play is an opportunity to reflect on incredibly relevant themes today. The power struggle, the inevitability of conflict, and the moral choices that determine the course of history are issues that resonate deeply in our time. Theatre offers a powerful medium to explore these dynamics, bringing the debates and emotions of that historical period alive. To immerse himself in these historical pages, the great Italian writer meets the 100 Cellos, an ensemble of one hundred cellists founded by Giovanni Sollima and Enrico Melozzi, who conducts them here. On the musical notes composed by Maestro Sollima, the story of the clash, which took place in 416 B.C., between the Athenians and the inhabitants of the island of Melo, impersonated here by Valeria Solarino and Stefania Rocca, unfolds.

Daria Deflorian returns to the Romaeuropa Festival as director and actress on stage with Monica Piseddu, Paolo Musio, and Gabriele Portoghese in this mysterious, powerful, irrational, and political gesture.
The Vegetarian: From October 29th to 3 November – 2024 – Teatro Vascello
Bello Mondo is a unique three-voice, poetic, and musical improvisation from the work of Mariangela Gualtieri. The poetry collection celebrates the beauty of the world through a lens of deep spirituality and introspection. Gualtieri’s delicate and powerful writing explores universal themes such as nature, love, beauty, and the fragility of human existence. In the theatre version, Gualtieri herself recites her verses, accompanied by the evocative sounds of Paolo Fresu and Uri Caine, promising a sensorial and meditative experience that will resonate with the audience’s soul.
Bello Mondo: september 24th 2024 – Teatro Argentina
Wuthering Heights from Emily Brontë‘s book is a Gothic masterpiece of passionate love and revenge set on the wild Yorkshire moors. Growing up in a context that mixed the wildness of the region with the ferments of the Industrial Revolution, forced to conceal her work as an author under a male pseudonym, Brontë reflected deeply on the alienation emerging in the capitalist society of the time. It is, therefore, no coincidence that director Martina Badiluzzi turned to this novel and its author for the fourth chapter of her cycle on female identities (“Cattiva sensibilità,” “The making of Anastasia” – winner of the Venice Biennale call for Directors Under 30 in 2019 – and “Penelope” – co-produced by Romaeuropa Festival 2022). Her Wuthering Heights is a dialogue between inner and outer, a reflection on the ambivalence of human nature. Transporting the spectators to the center of the tormented universe of Catherine and Heathcliff (played here by Arianna Pozzoli and Loris De Luna), Badiluzzi pays homage to the intrinsic power of literature and art, concluding his journey on identities with two tragic figures of the contemporary “founding myth of our society, a tale of the profound misunderstanding between feminine and masculine, between nature and civilization.”

Altri Libertini takes its inspiration from Pier Vittorio Tondelli‘s Altri Libertini, a collection of short stories exploring young Italians’ disordered and passionate lives in the 1970s and 1980s. With a raw and poetic style, Tondelli captures the energy of a generation in search of identity and freedom. Licia Lanera brings this vibrant ‘Romanzo’ (as Tondelli himself imagined and defined it) to the stage, concentrating on three short stories, Viaggio, Altri Libertini, and Autobahn, and dramaturgically bringing them together in a single performance that sees her on stage with Giandomenico Cupaiuolo, Danilo Giuva, and Roberto Magnani.
